Then the all-enveloping shimmering, buzzing, shattering of the walls between the worlds…. But at last the gentle peace of the shining stars glimpsed through the shivering leaves, the low murmured calling of the night creatures, and the slowing beat of my heart return me to the center.

Sacred trees are found in the Shamanic, Hindu, Egyptian, Sumerian, Toltec, Mayan, Norse, Celtic and Christian traditions. The World-tree is described in The Upanishads as “a tree eternally existing, its roots aloft, its branches spreading. In these dark times, more than ever, we seek the ancient wisdom, protection and shelter of trees.

More than simple drones (though there are plenty of those, too), this album collects many of the best and most innovative dark ambient artists in one place, including many who are new to me.
